Five to walk gallows for murdering blogger Avijit

DHAKA, Feb 16, 2021 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today sentenced five members of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam to death and another to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the murder of blogger and writer Avijit Roy.
Judge Mujibur Rahman of the Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal pronounced the judgement, also fining the convicts Taka 50 thousand each.
The death-row-convicts are Major (sacked) Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Zia, Mozammel Hussain alias Simon, Abu Siddique Sohail alias Shakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, Akram Hossain alias Abir and Md Arafat Rahman.
The tribunal sentenced another convict Shafiur Rahman Farabi to life imprisonment and fined him Taka 50 thousand, in default to suffer two years more in jail.
The family of slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy today demanded immediate arrest of the two fugitives, including the mastermind behind the killing Sayed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Major (sacked) Zia. Dhaka, Feb 16 (UNI) A tribunal has sentenced five members of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) to death and another person to life term imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of writer and founder of Mukto Mona blog Avijit Roy.
Judge of Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Tribunal Md Mujibur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday.
The death-row convicts are sacked Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque Zia, Mozammel Hussain alias Saymon, Abu Siddiq Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, Akram Hossen alias Abir and Md Arafat Rahman.
Of them, Zia and Akram are still absconding, while the four others are behind bars.
Earlier, 28 prosecution witnesses, including Avijit s father Prof Ajoy Roy, who passed away on December 9, 2019, gave their depositions before the tribunal.
During the closing arguments on February 4, the prosecution told the court that they were able to prove the charges against the accused and sought capital punishment for them.
The defence sought acquittal for their clients during their arguments.
On February 26, 2015, US-based Bangladeshi blogger Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya were hacked near TSC of Dhaka University by a gang of assailants when the couple was walking out of the Ekushey Boi Mela around 8:30pm.
