Michigan GOP and Dems want reform one year after George Floyd s death. Can it happen? Dave Boucher, Detroit Free Press © Ryan Garza, Detroit Free Press Protesters march through downtown Detroit on the sixth day of protests against police brutality on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. I wholly reject the notion of defunding the police. I think it s the worst idea I ve ever heard, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told the state Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee during a recent hearing. It s really almost impossible for a police officer to be stripped of their license, except under circumstances of course where you have conviction not charge, but conviction of a felony or a high-security misdemeanor, or where there s been a lengthy term of separation from one law enforcement agency to the next, Nessel said, echoing comments she made last year when she unveiled proposed police reforms.
The 1033 Program, Police Militarization, and the War on Drugs
The war on drugs has been a primary driver of the police militarization that has contributed to the police killings of Breonna Taylor, Aiyana Stanley-Jones, and so many others. The history of police militarization is inextricably linked to federal drug policy, and much of the funding for police militarization has come from programs created, in part, to enforce drug prohibition.
To address police killings and violence, we must end the war on drugs and prevent law enforcement and policymakers from using drug use and sales as a pretext for equipping and training police-like armies.
