At some point in the 20th century, the affliction known as “venereal disease” – named after the Roman goddess of love, Venus – was altered to the more medically sound “sexually transmitted disease” (or “infection”). It accorded with a more modern notion that sexuality was connected with health, rather than with the risks and mishaps of amours.
