Aisam and Aqeel face tough time in quarantine

ISLAMABAD: Leading tennis player Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan are passing through a tough time in a quarantine facility in Melbourne as both the players have already undergone Covid-19 test for four times during their eight-day stay in Australia.
Aqeel, who is accompanying Aisamul Haq as a hitting partner, has told ‘The News’ from Melbourne that they will have to stay in quarantine for two weeks.
“Since our arrival here we have been tested for Covid-19 four times and two more tests will be carried out at the end of quarantine period. We remain confined to our hotel rooms as the organisers of the event allowed us only three-hour practice session. The arrangements for special practice session have been made for each player till the end of quarantine period.”

ISLAMABAD: Mushaf Zia has been retained as the non-playing captain of the Pakistan team for the Davis Cup World Group 1 tie against Japan to be held at the Pakistan Sports Complex grass courts in Islamabad on March 5-6.
The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) has also invited eight players for the available three spots as leading international Aisamul Haq and Pakistan No 1 Aqeel Khan are automatic selection for the tie.
Talking to ‘The News’ on Saturday, Mushaf said the country should be proud of playing against the world tennis powerhouse Japan in a Davis Cup tie.
“It is really an honour to be named as the non-playing captain and coach of the team for the important home tie. I am thankful to the PTF for reposing trust in me. I would make all possible efforts to make the opportunity count. Don’t forget Japan is one of the powerhouses of the game in the world.

Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan, two of Pakistan s tennis stalwarts, will be reuniting for Australian Open 2021, albeit not as playing duo but as hitting partners, with the latter helping the former in training for the upcoming Grand Slam.

The News that he would be flying with Aisam to Melbourne and help him in his training there. The duo has planned to depart for Australia in the second week of January.
“Aisam wanted me to accompany him to Australia as a hitting partner and help him prepare for the Open. I gleefully accepted the offer. Aisam is planning to train for three weeks in Australia ahead of Grand Slam event.”
