the noose around kabul. martha: it s my understanding from someone that is in touch with the families that they re being told that you should make basically calculate your own risk at this point of going to the airport or staying home. essentially you re on your own. there s nothing we can do for you. absolutely gut wrenching. every hour we get request for help. people in hiding. terrible stories of what s being done to family members, those being found that worked with the americans. it is a true tragedy. martha: i don t know how the white house squares the effort being made by so many individuals and private organizations and people on capitol hill and senators to get these people out. we expect what we re about to hear is that those efforts don t matter and they re not supported by the u.s. government anymore at this point. let me just correct the record on that, martha. because we ve been involved in
come to the airport at kabul? we are in touch with americans directly, and we have contact with and i can give you an overall assessment of where we stand with that if that s helpful as well, but i m not going to give you more of an articulation of that from here. you talked about in that statement the threat that s posed by isis-k. but are there any active threats right now? i m going to give you an intelligence assessment, but we have increasing concerns about the threats and that is certainly a part of the president s assessment and decisionmaking. go ahead. is there any concern that maybe trying to reach this deadline and get everybody out, mistakes are being made now that there is a report that at least one of the afghans evacuated to qatar has suspected isis ties. well, first i would say we have a stringent vetting process which includes background checks before any individual comes to the united states. so i can t speak to one individual, but i can tell you and confirm
contingency plans to get everybody out. if it takes longer, i will do that. based on what we know right now, that doesn t look like it s going to happen. as we have said before, martha, we have had no plans whatsoever to try to get people out who are unable the get to the capitol city of afghanistan, kabul. the taliban has choked those arteries. i believe there s a way to do that if we had the will to do it. we have not done any of that. martha: remind everyone was president biden said on that, general, the other day. he said the reason we have not gone out and set up a perimeter way outside the airport in kabul is it s likely to draw a lot of unintended consequences in terms of people that are not part of the taliban. we re in constant contact with the taliban. he has spoken quite a bit about wanting to avoid any interaction or unintended consequences.
here s boris johnson s message to the taliban following that emergency g-7 meeting today. the number 1 condition is that they ve got to guarantee right the way through august 31 and beyond a safe passage for those that want to come out. guarantee a safe passage. in moments, nigel farage says biden has betrayed the u.k. and thousands in kabul. first to peter doocy where we await the president of the united states. peter? martha, something else that we re learning from jen psaki about that virtual conference president biden had with the other leaders of the g-7, yes, the white house thinks that they can get everybody out by the 31st. however, they say that is contingent on continued cooperation with the taliban including continued access for evacuees to the airport.
wanted him to push the deadline back and the critics of the president have speaking out very strongly on his decision. what do you say to those that are criticizing the president by sticking to this deadline and amounts to him to capitulating to the taliban? first and i think i m going to read the statement. a number of you have seen it. just in case. it has quite a bit of additional context that is not exactly aligned and he stuck with the deadline that you just conveyed. during a meeting with the g-7 leaders, the president conveyed our mission in kabul will end based on the achievement of our objectives that is a key component. he said we re on pace to finish by august 31. as you know in the last nine days, we ve effectively help evacuate 57,000 people. that has escalated each day. our focus and continues to be
