Whitsunday cold case murder trial begins today

Premium Content Subscriber only Jury selection has begun in the murder trial against a man accused of killing his mother at Airlie Beach. Christopher Mark Britton has already pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, which allegedly occurred 25 years ago. It is alleged Mr Britton shot his mother in the face on or about March 6, 1996 at Jubilee Pocket. Her body was discovered a day after her alleged murder when relatives arrived to find her front door open and a shotgun missing from her home. Mr Britton was arrested in June 2018. The trial, under Supreme Court Justice David North, begins this morning.

Premium Content Subscriber only A woman has relived the gruesome moment she found her mother-in-law shot to death in her Jubilee Pocket home during a murder trial against her brother in law. “I saw mum on the bed, the back of her head was split open,” Maxine Britton told Mackay Supreme court on Monday afternoon. “There was a spot of blood on her left cheek.” She was the first person to find Dorothy Britton in 1997 after she had been asked by her mother-in-law’s husband Ian Britton to check on her when she failed to answer the phone on March 7.

The incident is alleged to have occurred on December 1 last year at a fast food restaurant about 12.45am. Police say this man could help with their investigations. Photo: Queensland Police Police believe the man pictured, who has brown hair and is wearing a tropical shirt with black shorts, may be able to help with the investigation.
