thanks, erica. we re in the short lived lull. between the russia h from the thanksgiving holiday. look at the numbers at airports nationwide according to tsa. 1.4 million people yesterday, that is the anticipated low number of the week. in fact, it is the lowest number we ve seen since february. but look at wednesday. the day before thanksgiving. that is when we saw 2.46 million people screened by tsa at airports across the country. that number only 6% off of what we saw on the same day back there 2019 before the pandemic. in fact, it is really just shy of a pandemic era air travel record. now the big question, when everybody begins coming home on sunday, when we could see this really big number again, and could we see an all time air travel record. p not just pandemic era, but the all-time record, 2.88 million people screened by tsa at airports nationwide on the
name we don t know. we can see how beaten the speck was in that picture. no question. nick watt, thank you very much. with millions of americans traveling for the thanksgiving holiday, air portsds have it mostly under control, you ll be happy to hear, with very few cancellations so far. tsa screened nearly 2.5 million people at airports just yesterday. that s near a record for travel since the beginning of the pandemic. from air travel to roads, even the big parade, we have it covered this morning. let s begin with cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean at reagan national airport. pete, how are the holiday crowds moving this morning? reporter: the crowds are moving pretty good today, jim. they ve been big over the past few days, 2.46 million people screened at airports nationwide just yesterday by the tsa. what s so interesting about that is that number only about 6% off from where we were in 2019 before the pandemic. we re pretty close to a pandemic-era air travel record,
gone above and beyond to get ready for that. they ve adjusted their schedules, been on hiring binges, putting people in the right places that we hope will be at the right time. reporter: the numbers ahead could be pretty big, jim. on sunday, we could see a number according to the tsa as high as 2.5 million people at airports nationwide. that could be the highest number we ve seen since july 1st when there was a pandemic-era air travel record of 2.49 million people. we re really, really close, jim. it s good to see. i remember the dark days of the pandemic, it was a far different picture. pete muntean at reagan national, thanks so much. while it is clear skies for folks on the east coast, it s turning out to be a rainy thanksgiving for many in parts of the middle and southern u.s. meteorologist chad myers tracking it all for us in the cnn weather center. tell us who is having a pretty thanksgiving and maybe a not-so-pretty thanksgiving. new york city is having a
that lists out the different reasons for cancellations. not only are there increasing sick worker calls across a couple of work groups, there are also weather issues and then the issue of air traffic control. this is something because the airlines are putting some of the blame here back on the federal government. the faa, though, insists that it does have enough air traffic controllers. it has staffed up. it is actually moving controllers around to some of those delay and cancellation hot spots. no doubt, this weekend is going to be huge. united airlines says its bookings are about 92% of where we were during the july 4th holiday back in 2019 before the pandemic. and we just hit a new pandemic era air travel record even ahead of this weekend, 2.46 million people screened by tsa nationwide just yesterday. so, it s going to be a big weekend. the big question now is whether or not it s going to be a smooth one, jim and poppy. yeah. will you get there or will your
