Special warfare airmen honor their fallen with 24-hour run, march in South Korea

By DAVID CHOI | STARS AND STRIPES Published: May 3, 2021 CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea Dozens of special warfare airmen weathered heavy wind and rain for their 10th annual 24-hour Challenge Run last week at the largest U.S. military base on the Korean Peninsula. The event, hosted Thursday by the 604th Air Support Operations Squadron out of Camp Humphreys, honored the 12 members of the Air Force’s Tactical Air Control Party who have died in combat or during training since 1989. Tactical air control specialists coordinate air strikes from the ground and typically embed with units from other military branches. Candidates undergo an intense training regimen that includes the military’s survival, evasion, resistance and escape school at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington.

Biden nominates Fil-Am veteran for Air Force under secretary

Published April 28, 2021 9:37am US President Joe Biden has nominated a Filipino-American Iraq War veteran for undersecretary of the Air Force, according to an announcement from the White House. Gina Ortiz Jones is a former US Air Force captain who had seen action in Iraq. Commissioned through the Air Force ROTC program at Boston University, Ms. Jones served as an Air Force intelligence officer and deployed to Iraq with the 18th Air Support Operations Group supporting close air support operations, the White House said of Jones. According to NBC News, Jones mother, Victorina Ortiz, was a public school teacher who immigrated to the United States.

President Joe Biden has nominated San Antonio native Gina Ortiz Jones for Under Secretary of the Air Force. Jones is among 10 individuals nominated by Biden for national security positions on Tuesday. If confirmed, she’ll become the first out lesbian to serve as under secretary of a military branch. Jones, a John Jay High School graduate, was raised by a single mom who came to U.S. from the Philippines. Jones earned a BA and MA in economics from Boston University which she attended on a four-year Air Force ROTC scholarship.
