couple of air fields in the west. it s not like there has not been any airstrikes in western ukraine since the beginning of this operation 16 days ago. it s just that we have not seen that as a routine matter. so now you have two in one day, that s notable. what it means, where the russians are going we don t really know. we believe the targets were air fields, so from a military perspective, you can see a certain logical sense to deny the ukrainians the ability to use air strips in the western part of the country. by and large, and to the vast majority of the combat power that they are exercising in ukraine, it s in the east. it s everything east of kyiv. that s where the violence is the worst. that s where they are putting a lot of their energy and resources in. those are the population centers they are going after, kharkiv, chernihiv, kyiv, down to the
the program. start with the mix. if there is bipartisan support, why is president biden sitting on his hands while people die. president biden is more interested in not offending putin. we should facilitate transfer of migs, we have to make sure we are careful not getting engaged in this conflict. there are many ways to fight the russians by cutting off the oil supply and releasing what is available in united states. we have to just say no at some point. carley: i also wonder and i m concerned about the fact that russia is targeting air fields and you have to wonder to todd s
in the western part of ukraine. this is the international peacekeeping and security center here, northwest of the capital city of lviv. what s really interesting is this area from here to here, the polish border is only 11 miles. it s unclear what significance that base had in this current conflict that was where nato troops were working with ukrainian soldiers prior to this conflict. any idea what the russians were after when they fired all the cruise missiles and killed 35 people? it was a training facility of sorts. as recently as february, u.s. forces were there, the small group helping the ukrainian forces. appears to have some link to the military on the ground in ukraine and that s where the russians have been using the heaviest fire power when they hit barracks or air fields, they are using many shells in residential areas and neighborhoods but not just saving the heavy fire power for military targets. earlier we saw russian missile
end. neil: so this idea that the russian soldiers are sort of being moved around towards western ukraine, other points, is it just to confuse ukrainians, to confuse us? in western ukraine, there was a couple of attacks on air fields. they haven t seen much activity in that part of the country. by and large in terms of ground forces, they re all located in the eastern half of the country in the south coming infrom crimea. we assess that they have made progress in getting closer to kyiv. some of those advance elements by the airport to the northwest of the city did move a little further down the road. they are being now backed up by some follow-on forces that are sort of filling in to their spots. so they re making some progress. clearly, you can see it yourself, the shelling and the
significant increase in the numbers of atatacks and the typs of weapons being used in kharkiv especially. and then we had these two strikes against air fields in the west of the country, not that far from where you are, which clearly indicate as you were saying in the intro there, a possibility or i think frankly a certainty that the russians are trying to interrupt the ability of the ukrainians to resupply, firstly, and secondly it use air fields for military purposes, a lot of their air force, the ukrainian air force, amazingly, is still able to fly and still involved in combat against the russian invaders on a daily basis, jim. yeah. no question. look where they fire to get a sense of their intentions, which frankly also applies to all the civilian areas they have hit. sam kiley, thanks so much. we re seeing this morning new satellite images that show that once 40 mile long slow moving
