Australian Defence Minister Warns Conflict Over Taiwan Cannot ‘Be Discounted’
Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton is warning that conflict over Taiwan is a possibility and has vowed to work with allies to maintain peace in the region.
“People need to be realistic about the activity,” Dutton told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Sunday. “There is militarisation of bases across the region. Obviously, there is a significant amount of activity, and there is an animosity between Taiwan and China.”
“If you look at any of the rhetoric that is coming out of China from spokesmen, particularly in recent weeks and months in response to different suggestions that have been made, they have been very clear about that goal,” he added.
War Over Taiwan Likely in Next 5 to 10 Years: Former Australian Defence Minister
Australia’s former defence minister is warning that a “kinetic war” with China is likely in the next five to 10 years, saying he believes the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will push to dominate the Indo-Pacific region.
“Five years ago, I would have said that the possibility was very unlikely now I would have to say that the possibility is more likely than it was then,” Christopher Pyne said during an address to the University of Adelaide on Monday.
“Not a cyber war, but a real one involving loss of life, destruction of military platforms, with aggressors and defenders on different sides,” he added.

The U.S. Air Force will struggle to maintain pressure on the Chinese military if conflict erupts around the Taiwan Strait, according to a recent war games analysis.
“F-22s and F-35s operating under ideal conditions at sophisticated home bases here in the United States, have an ‘operational readiness’ rate of about 60 percent,” Joseph Siracusa, adjunct professor of the political history of international diplomacy at Curtin University told The Epoch Times.
Operational readiness describes the ability of a military branch to operate and maintain its systems and procedures effectively.
