3 killed in Kashmir encounters

Srinagar: Three militants were killed and another injured in an encounter in the southern district of Pulwama, according to police in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The two separate shootings were the first in Indian-administered Kashmir this year.
Earlier, three militants were killed in a brief shootout on Friday evening in the Mandoora village of the Tral area. The three were identified as Waris Hassan, Arif Bashir, and Ahtishamul Haq, all locals and members of the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, Kashmir region police chief Vijay Kumar said in an official statement.

A father who lost his 17-year-old son to an alleged police encounter but was denied the right to bury him dug a grave at his village on Saturday in the hope of getting the body back some day.
A video of a teary-eyed Mushtaq Ahmad digging the grave in his Pulwama village and pleading for his son’s body has been widely circulated on social media.
Class XI student Athar Mushtaq was one of three youths killed in the alleged gunfight in Srinagar on Wednesday. The others were fellow Pulwama resident Aijaz Ahmad Ganai, son of a police head constable, and Shopian resident Zubair Ahmad, brother of two policemen.
But families say the dead men were innocent civilians.
Kashmir valley s top police official said that weapons were found.
Indian security forces said they killed three fighters in Kashmir s main city, Srinagar, after a gun battle on Wednesday, but families of the dead men said they were innocent civilians.
India has been quelling unrest in the disputed Himalayan region for decades and killed more than 200 people this year, according to official data.

It is, however, rare for families to immediately contest victims allegiance to armed groups.
Police in Kashmir this month filed charges against an army officer and a civilian for allegedly killing three labourers and planting weapons to pass them off as armed fighters.
