I am writing to express my deep concern about the deteriorating situation in Gaza and the recent statements made by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
Israeli historian Ilan Pappe once described Israel’s 17-year long siege of Gaza as a slow genocide. Israel is now using the excuse of the lethal attack by Hamas to accelerate this genocide, a policy openly supported by the US, EU and other Western powers.
Gearóid Duff (‘Pope Francis should stop acting the ‘goat’ when it comes to blessing sinners’, Letters, October 6) criticises Pope Francis’s comments about the Catholic Church becoming possibly more open in the future to blessing same-sex couples “choosing to live in intimate same-sex partnerships”.
The inter-agency response that has led to the seizure and capture of a huge consignment of drugs shows Ireland is seen by criminal organisations involved in drugs importation and supply as the gateway to Europe from South America.
Bravo, President Michael D Higgins, who has brought clarity regarding the UN with the following words: “It is unable to stop war, it is unable to end famine, it is unable to stop conflicts, it is unable to manage migration and it will be saved by countries like Ireland who have no other aim or ambition than to have a safe, sustainable and peaceful world.”
