Two of the top teams in class 2A got together Tuesday night at Paul N. Bailey Field in Wellman when the No. 4 ranked Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks hosted No. 7 Durant in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Golden Hawks won game one 5-4 while Durant earned a split taking the second contest 12-9. Mid-Prairie took an early lead in the first game with a pair of unearned runs in the third on three consecutive Wildcat errors. Cain Brown and Kayden Reinier scored in the inning. The Cats responded in the fifth with a four spot, to go up by two on two walks, a Mid-Prairie error and a triple from left fielder Aydin Flockhart. Mid-Prairie came back in the bottom half with a run when Will Cavanagh singled and came home on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. In the sixth, Aidan Rath changed that with one swing of the bat, launching a two-run homer to right centerfield, putting Mid-Prairie up 5-4 and freshman Karson Grout came on in the seventh to earn the save. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball and softball teams travel to Lowden tonight to take on the North Cedar Knights in River Valley Conference play. The Mid-Prairie baseball team is 3-0 on the season after beating Fairfield 8-0 in Wellman Tuesday. The Golden Hawks are ranked No. 4 in class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Mid-Prairie is hitting .382 as a team with a 0.74 combined ERA. On the year, they are led by Kayden Reinier with a .636 average, seven hits and five RBI. Alex Bean, Keegan Gingerich and Aidan Rath have all recorded pitching wins this year, with Bean and Gingerich not surrendering a run.

In posting their highest win total in more than a decade, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys basketball team reached those heights with a historically good defense. The Golden Hawks held opponents to just 45 points per game, the best mark in school history, breaking the previous record of 47 set in the 2007-08 season.
Mid-Prairie held opponents to 40 points or fewer, eight times in their 23 games and kept opponents from reaching 30 points twice, including giving up just 25 to Tipton, their best outing of the year, in a win December 4th. The Golden Hawks were the best rebounding team in the River Valley South with 698 for the season, second with 68 blocked shots and fourth with 161 steals.
Awards were released this week from the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and two Mid-Prairie boys basketball players were honored. The IBCA announced their all-substate awards for class 2A.
Mid-Prairie junior Carter Harmsen was selected. He was also one of just three unanimous elite all River Valley Conference selections. He led the Hawks at 18 points per game, third in the RVC south and seven boards per contest, fourth in the south. He totaled 57 assists, fifth most in the division and 25 steals. He scored 32 points in the Golden Hawks playoff loss to Camanche.
Golden Hawk senior Aidan Rath was also an all-substate team selection. He finished his career posting 10 points per game, ninth in the south, to go along with six and a half rebounds per game, sixth in the RVC south. His 27 blocked shots were third in the division.
