Authorities in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) have upheld a 15-year jail term for an ethnic Uyghur Turkish national convicted of “terrorist activities” following a secret prison retrial, according to sources, who say little is known about his well-being despite repeated inquiries from Ankara.
A person who claimed familiarity with the situation recently told RFA’s Uyghur Service that Mamatali Kashgarli, a Turkish citizen and father of four, was confirmed guilty, along with an acquaintance named Abdujelil Abduhelil, in a March 17 retrial at the Qalghach Binam prison in Kashgar (in Chinese, Kashi) prefecture’s Peyziwat (Jiashi) county.
