Outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo is today meeting with his arch political rivals Ahmed Madobe (Jubbaland)and Abdullahi Deni (Puntland) for the first time in several weeks following pressure from the international community.
Though Information Minister Osman Dubbe described it as an ‘icebreaker’ meeting convened by Farmaajo, sources privy to the talks authoritatively confirm that the international community upped the tempo against the three leaders to vacate their grandstanding.
The meeting comes barely a day after Madobe and Deni issued another condemnation against Farmaajo for ‘frustrating’ the talks and pulling the breaks on any efforts to resolve the stalemate.
The three leaders last met in February during the third round of talks in Dhusamareb which ended in disarray. The Federal Member State leaders and opposition presidential candidates accused Farmaajo of ‘walking out’ of the talks.
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Villa Somalia has announced another round of talks with Federal Member State leaders to resolve the ongoing electoral row that has seen elections postponed three times.
A statement from the president’s office noted that the meeting will take place on Thursday in Mogadishu and will be attended by all FMS leaders and Banadir regional governor Omar Filish.
This will be the sixth round of talks between the outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo and FMS leaders. The two sides have not been able to resolve their differences resulting in walkouts. Ahmed Madobe (Jubbaland) and his ally Abduallhi Deni of Puntland have both demanded the exit of Farmaajo from office as a condition for talks.
GOOBJOOG NEWS|SOMALIA: The prospects of an electoral deal have once again hit a brick wall after Jubbaland and Puntland, two of the protagonists in the ongoing stalemate affirmed they will not be attending any more talks with outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo casting uncertainty on the fate of the much-delayed elections.
The two allied states said in separate statements they will not be attending the Mogadishu talks convened by Farmajo dealing a blow to a last-minute deal that a joint technical committee said last week it had reached.
“The expired president Farmajo should be out of the election process. He should not have a role in the process of election in order for all political stakeholders to have confidence in it,” Jubbaand said in a statement.
GOOBJOOG NEWS|DHUSAMAREB: A glimmer of hope emerged from Dhusamareb Thursday morning following a compromise deal between the federal and state leaders on the ongoing electoral stalemate in what could now pave way for the much-delayed exercise to kick off.
Sources close to the talks have intimated to Goobjoog News that President Mohamed Farmaajo has significantly ceded ground in what could emerge as a win for the opposition and the two allied states of Jubbaland and Puntland.
Farmaajo, sources said, agreed to filter out people considered as his cronies in the Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET). These include senior civil servants, Villa Somalia operatives and intelligence officials. Villa Somalia deputy chief of staff Abdinur Mohamed is one of the senior-most administration officials appointed to FIET by Farmaajo.
