couric: good evening, everyone. it was an extraordinary moment. president obama went on national television today and did what no other president has ever even been asked to do: prove he s a natural born u.s. citizen, a requirement for holding that office. calling the birther issue a distraction, the president released a copy of his long-form birth certificate, showing he was born in hawaii, as he s always said. the short form, which has been out there for a while, had not satisfied some obama critics. but there is nothing in the long-form certificate about the president and his parents that we didn t already know. chief white house correspondent chip reid now on the president s surprise visit to the briefing room. reporter: sounding both amused and exasperated, the president said it s time to end the debate over where he was born. yes, in fact, i was born in hawaii, august 4, 1961. reporter: the white house released a copy of the president s original birth certificat
