SIGNIFICANT FOOD WASTE ATTRIBUTED LACK OF COOPERATION AMONG FARMERS

Antigua and Barbuda’s Director of Agriculture Gregory Bailey says a significant amount of food is being wasted in this country.   He opines this results from inadequacies at production, transportation, retail, and consumption.  At the level of production, Bailey attributes most food waste to the protracted absence of cooperation among farmers.  He posits this hinders planning in the number of specific crops grown at appointed times and at agreed-upon levels.   Bailey adds food waste is paramount to wastage of land, labour, capital, energy, and water which are already scarce resources in this country.   He not only encourages the formation of cooperatives among the farmers but also proper planning by consumers when shopping to delimit the amount of food wasted in households.
