Uninsured. You know where they go. They go to the emergency room. Who pays . The taxpayers wind up paying. Every time. I yield back the balance of my time. Thank you very much. The gentleman from texas, dr. Michael burgess. Thank you, mr. Chairman i. Want to thank our witnesses for being here. Ive been promised time by mr. Woodall to speak on the floor on this tomorrow. I wont go through the entire things that i had. I do remember a time up here in march of 2010 when the senate bill was brought to the rules committee for us to vote on on the floor the next day. And i did come to the rules committee with 18 what i thought were very valid suggestions for improvement in the Affordable Care act. Every one was methodically turned down by a 94 vote by the rules committee when the democrats were in control of this committee. I also remember a hearing that was held in september of 2008. It was the same day that Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. So it was one of those days that gets etched

In getting it to the president s desk. I yield back the balance of my time. Thank you very much. I do not see mr. Polis here. The gentleman from ohio is recognized. Thank you, mr. Chairman. Dr. Price, thank you for being here. Thanks for your care for a lot of patients, thousands of patients over your time practicing medicine. Thanks to the gentleman from kentucky for being here. I appreciate you both giving us your time today and your opinions. I was really struck by something you said earlier, dr. Price, about the difference between Health Coverage and healthcare. We have told millions of americans that they have coverage, but theyre not getting care. And they cant afford care. And when they get care, they are being chased something i dont remember you saying, being chased by bill collectors the rest of their life because of high deductibles they didnt have. We have confused coverage with care. Just because you have a piece of paper or a card that says you have insurance doesnt mean

Jones, your opening testimony was touched upon where china is north koreas last remaining patron. What would happen if china joined us in the sanctions if were just thinking through and really did cut north korea off . How would north korea respond . Well, china has said that they support fully United Nations sanctions and i talked about some of the signs that the chinese are beginning to take unprecedented action in that direction, signalling to north korea they will pay a price if they dont come around in particular on the nuclear issue. This is why when we talk to the chinese we try to talk about how we can work in concert to bring pressure on tnorth korea in a surgical way. Were going to keep at that because we think increasingly the core chinese interests in stability on the Korean Peninsula and our core interest in security that these are converging concerns. And we are seeing signs for the first time in decades that the chinese also recognize this that their stability will be af

Thought about todays hearing as it relates to cdc, it is this. With the recent incidents, we recognize the pattern at cdc where we need to greatly improve the culture of safety and i am overseeing sweeping measures to improve that culture of safety. Cdc works 24 7 and our scientists protect americans from threats, including naturally occurring threats like ebola and mers and drug resistant bacteria such as anthrax. But we must do that work more safely and we will. Theres a recap of the recent incidents that summarized in our report which has been completed and were just at the outset of our investigation of the influenza contamination. Id be pleased to go through the two diagrams weve provided to the subcommittee which outlined what we know to date. But in brief, the anthrax incident shows deeply troubling problems. A lack of proper protocol, incorrect inactivation procedures. Failure to ensure that we were transferring materials that were sterile when we thought they were sterile. Use

Solve, but we think it would be worth spending some time even at a theoretical strategic level to address the issue and think through how we go about doing it in the future. Dr. Frieden, what are your views here in terms of the growing numbers of of the labs and just what how to move forward with the activity here in the u. S. . I do think this is a complicated topic for which theres probably not a quick and simple solution, but just logically, the more places with dangerous pathogens goes on, the more possibility there is of accidents or accidental releases. So ensuring that the work that happens is happening in a safe environment is critical and the key concept i think we have to apply is riskbenefit. I dont think we can ever guarantee zero risk for some of the things that are done that we can do everything humanly possible to get that risk as low as possible, but we have to ensure that the benefit is something thats reasonably likely to occur. Thank you. Thank you very much. With th
