A migrant to Thunder Bay whose quest to avoid deportation attracted significant public attention has scored a key victory, after his application for permanent residence status was approved in principle.
Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, who came to Thunder Bay four years ago as an international student, but ran into trouble financing his education during the pandemic, faces deportation as of Jan. 1.
Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal came to Thunder Bay, Ont., to attend Lakehead University in 2018, and has been working and volunteering for several community groups. The 23-year-old now faces an exclusion order but the community is advocating for him to be allowed to stay.
