218 in most instances. so he s really kind of on the edge there of being able to tell the tea partiers to take a hike. he may need them a little bit for some votes. but it s not going to be a greatly different dynamic than he s had for the last two years. the big difference is going to be what happens in the senate. now republican congressman nick mulvaney who voted against john boehner two years ago but voted for him today issued this statement. we walked on to the floor two years ago with signed pledges, handwritten promises for more than enough people to deny boehner his job. but when it came time to vote almost half of those people changed their minds, including some of those who voted against boehner today. fool me once shame on you. casey hunt there s the truth of it. these profiles in courage that
you re suggesting a number of votes to make those like you feel good but wouldn t accomplish anything and make the rest of the country come to hate washington even more? i would might make that argument. but i say you need to do the right thing. whatever your vote is you have to keep your oath to uphold the constitution, preserve and protect the rule of law. that means pass the legislation with the tools you have send it over to the senate and it s an their conscience. and the voters have an opportunity to judge that. the antithesis of that is we re funding the president s unconstitutional acts. you can argue obamacare s constitutional constitutionality. we ve seen this movie before. i don t want to watch it again, jake. and lastly on this issue and then i want to talk about presidential politics the people who have talked about running for speaker against
bother to vote. of the three republicans that didn t vote as well as nine republicans who voted against boehner. congressman labrador has been a frequent critic of speaker boehner. the question today coming out of the debacle that boehner undertook at the behest of the far right fringe of his party is what is next for this republican caucus? joining me is joy reed, more than contributor, managing editor, and contributor and bureau chief of the huffington post . are you surprised, joy, by all the reports today that all these house republicans who made boehner do this, right? it failed miserably. it was a humiliation and all of them being like, that that is my boy. john boehner? are you kidding me? i love that dude. what is the deal? the most ironic outcome of the whole debacle is the increase in popularity of boehner among the base. this was sort of his bath in acid. he had to prove that he would do anything, climb any hill, destroy the country at the behest of the tea party.
