The police have impounded 1,049 motorbikes in a week at various points of Accra as part of an operation to clamp down on the activities of suspected criminals.
At least, 137 of the riders have been put before court, with 25 of them already convicted.
Fines totalling GH¢29,380 imposed by the courts have been cleared by the collective group convicted for various offences.
The exercise, which was undertaken in all the 14 divisional commands of the Accra Regional Police Command, targeted unregistered motorbikes and the illegal use of motorbikes for commercial purposes, popularly known as okada.
Riders soliciting for passengers, riding without helmets, licences or insurance were arrested.

The Police in Kaneshie have impounded sixty motorbike and okada riders for various offences.
According to the Kaneshie District Police Command, the move forms part of plans to clamp down on activities of criminals within the area and its environs.

The police say the said persons were arrested for offences such as parking and soliciting for passengers, riding without license, riding without a helmet and some without insurance and roadworthy certificates.
The Kaneshie District Police Command has impounded 60 motorbikes and are processing them for various offences.
In a statement, the Command noted that the exercise is part of plans to clamp down on activities of criminals within the area and its environs.
According to the police, the exercise targeted unregistered motorbikes and ‘okada’ activities within the area.
Also during the five-hour operation, riders who were caught parking and soliciting for passengers, riding without helmets, licenses and insurance were arrested.
The arrested riders are being processed for court, the statement added.
Recently, the police rounded up over 100 persons suspected of criminal activity in different parts of the Greater Accra Region.
More than 100 suspected criminals have been arrested in swoops in some parts of Accra.
The special one-week operation, dubbed no space for criminals , is aimed at clamping down on the activities of criminals.
It was carried out in places considered to be dens, ghettos and streets of criminals, the police said.
It was undertaken by the district police commands in Adenta, Nungua, Nima, Pokuase, La, Osu, Kpeshie, James Town, East Legon, Adabraka, and Weija, and led by the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Aful Boakye Yiadom.

The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Affia Tenge, told the Daily Graphic that a number of items suspected to be narcotics, along with motorbikes suspected to have been used for criminal activities, were seized during the operations.
