Nikki Giovanni on Black History, Maya Angelou and Why She Won t Write About About the Capitol Riots

Nikki Giovanni Like most people during the snowstorm that wiped across the nation last week, Nikki Giovanni was stuck at home. Giovanni, considered one of the most influential American poets of her time, was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, but for the last 30 years, has called Virginia home.  With the exception of taking her dog out for a brief bathroom break, Giovanni was peacefully snowed in, her days spent teaching lectures, writing, tending to her Rosemary bush, and savoring her morning coffee. That week, nothing had been open in her small, rural town, except, she said, for Starbucks.  “The people there are so friendly,” Giovanni told Inside Edition Digital. She then proceeded to sing the theme-song of the 1982 T.V. series, Cheers.

The Cast and Crew of Bazzooka on Celebrating BIPOC Art and its Ability to Enact Change

photo by Melissa Wax “This is Seattle, we’re the most progressive city on the planet,” states the mayor of Seattle in the second episode of the dystopian web series While it’s a fictional story, the parallels between the Seattle of Bazzooka and the Seattle we know today are striking in their similarities. A mayor who sees “no color or gender or sexual identity, only love” while also ignoring the needs of and injustices towards people of color. An evil tech corporation that’s trampling local businesses, especially those run by people of color. BIPOC youth standing up for themselves and enacting change through protesting. It’s a plotline that could’ve only been born out of the hellscape known as 2020 and yet stands on its own as a thoroughly entertaining, unpreachy mystery sci-fi series.

A day of service

Monday January 18 commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and there are several ways to participate in our yearly tribute to one of the architects of the civil rights movement. MLK Day has been observed in all 50 states since the year 2000, making the Public Enemy song “By The Time I Get to Arizona” a piece of history (but in this writer’s opinion, a historical jam). A few of the interesting online programs scheduled: The City of Chicago’s annual Interfaith Celebration was transformed into a virtual presentation this year, free to watch now at the city’s website as part of their Together We Heal collaboration with the people at Public Narrative.

hip-hop fashion exploded in the early 1990s, not only as a style statement, but as an expression of identity. today that same urban community continues to showcase its creativity at festivals like afro punk. cnn s film fresh dressed documents it all. thank you so much afro punk, thank you so much. this is afro punk. it s a global music festival featuring black artists with an annual show in brooklyn and show this is year in atlanta and paris. it s a movement reminiscent of the counter cultural roots of hip-hop. afro punk if we use one word is about freedom. what defines this movement is individuality. i think it is pushing the boundaries of what society says
