When Dr Nomusa Mashigo from the Division of Haematological Pathology was appointed as an independent member of the Clinical Governance Committee of the South African National Blood Service, she immediately saw it as an opportunity to create awareness of the organisation s work.
“Ordinary people need to be made aware of how much they can give to society by just donating blood every few months. It takes nothing away from them, but it gives so much to others, Mashigo said in an interview.
Her appointment with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is for a three-year period and effective from 1 November 2020. The Clinical Governance Committee is an oversight body which is tasked with overseeing all clinical aspects of the blood services, including procurement of instruments needed for blood transfusions and training for all personnel working in the

HEAL and SANBS to host blood initiative

DURBAN - THE country has a dire shortage of blood and unless people come forward and donate blood, the country may run out in a matter of days, the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) says.
The Humanitarian, Environmental and Animal Liberation (HEAL) Foundation has partnered with the SANBS to address South Africaâs blood shortage.
HEAL responded to SANBSâs appeal by recruiting blood donors. The foundationâs public relations officer Prathna Dudhrajh said the shortage was brought to their attention and they decided to partner with the SANBS to help them get more donors.
Call to donate blood as SANBS stocks dwindle

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is facing severe blood stock shortages.
Blood stocks are critically low across the country and the blood service is in urgent need of donations.
The SANBS has appealed to new and regular blood donors who meet the basic criteria to visit a SANBS blood donation site to donate blood.
SANBS acting chief operations officer Marion Vermeulen says the Covid-19 pandemic has had a drastic impact on blood donations.
According to Vermeulen, there s been a 45% reduction in the largest donor group aged between 16 and 25.
