Today, Dr Anne-Beatrice Kihara has become the new President of FIGO. Her inauguration will take place during the Closing Ceremony of FIGO World Congress 2023 in Paris. She is the first the first FIGO President from sub-Saharan Africa. Dr Kihara is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Nairobi, where she has worked for the past 15 years. She is currently the Division Chair of the UON- KNH Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Dr Anne Beatrice Kihara is FIGO’s current President-Elect, set to become the first African woman to be FIGO President from October 2023. Since 2021, Dr Kihara has been the President of the African Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. What have been the key achievements of the Maputo Protocol? The evening of 15th December marked the end of our first ever Hybrid Congress. In collaboration with the African Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (AFOG) and the Rwanda Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RSOG), we held our FIGO Africa Regional Kigali Congress, Virtual Event with a Hub in Kigali, for those who live locally to attend, with registrants able to participate virtually from anywhere in the world.
Over two and a half days from 13th to 15th December, the Congress brought together more than 1,100 health professionals and specialists in the fields of gynaecology, obstetrics and women’s health from 74 countries.
