Eswatini: International trade union cooperation and solidarity to support educators

International trade union cooperation was at the heart of recent activities by the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT). It has successfully engaged with the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) and the Trade Union of Education in Finland (OAJ). This cooperation will allow the Swaziland/Eswatini education union to strengthen its structure and demonstrate the full support of educators at global level. It comes at a time when the union is being confronted with threats to human and trade union rights.

SADTU statement on the beginning of the 2022 academic year

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) welcomes the beginning of the 2022 academic year. Learners in inland schools are due to back on Wednesday, 12 January while coastal areas are expected to open their doors to learners on Monday, 17 January 2022. The year begins with the COVID-19 pandemic still prevalent in our midst. For the past two years, learners have lost considerable learning time due to lockdowns and rotational schooling put in place to ensure social distancing in order to keep the pandemic at bay.

Education unions in Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Canada, the USA and South Africa call on governments to support vaccine equity

Education International member organisations in Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada, the United States of America and South Africa are calling on governments to support the temporary waiver of intellectual property rights on Covid-19 vaccines and treatments at the World Trade Organization. If adopted, the waiver would enable an expansion of vaccine production across the world, thus helping to ensure equitable access to vaccines for all.
