[Peterson Githaiga, Standard] Manufacturers from Kenya and Tanzania have called for the expedited resolution of non-tariff barriers (NTBs) and review of the East African Community Common External Tariff on the back of unsatisfactory trade levels in the last few years. Kenya’s exports to Tanzania declined from $342.9 million (Sh37 billion) in 2016 to $294.9 million (Sh32 billion) in 2020, while its exports to the rest of the world grew from $5.7 billion (Sh615 billion) in 2016 to $6.02 billion (Sh650 billion) in 2020. On the other hand, Tanzania’s exports to Kenya grew from $126.2 million (Sh13.6 billion) in 2016 to $258.2 million (Sh27.8 billion) in 2020.

Kenya faces revenue, job losses as House ratifies UK trade deal

Kenya faces revenue, job losses as House ratifies UK trade deal March 12, 2021 By DAVID MWERE Kenya is staring at massive losses in revenue following the ratification of the Economic Partnership Agreement with the United Kingdom. The National Assembly ratified the EPA on Tuesday, opening the local market to about 1,934 products from the UK, whose import tariff will either be lowered or zero-rated. The pact, which expires in 25 years, has been adopted at a time the country is facing challenges in financing its obligations. Although the EPA allows for gradual and partial reduction of tariffs, from 95 per cent of the basic duty followed by total elimination, fears abound that a majority of imports are likely to be subjected to zero duty at the point of entry.
