michigan narrowly swung for President Trump in 2016. Its a great state. We won michigan. Now as Democratic Candidates arrive to make their pitches to voters, the president i
which iss is why we ll take a l at the early state contests. and also steve kornacki and the big board. and remember, there is actually four hurdles in order to sort of get democrats to understand the pieces of the electorate they need, whether midwesterners in iowa learning how do grass roots stuff, appealing to independents in new hampshire, latinos in nevada, african-americans in south carolina. so when you think about the first four states, don t assume that they are just randomly on a man omanp. there is reason to it.
voters, well educated white voters. it s really hard for me to see how bloomberg although he has had some support from mayors cuts into the african-american community which is the bulwark for biden. the critical question in the democratic race is if joe biden underperforms in iowa and new hampshire which is possible, does that or does that not undermine his support among african-americans in south carolina and down the road. if it doesn t, he can still recover and claw out the nomination. george mcgoven in 72, bill clinton in, 92 the only other ones. right now it doesn t appear that they re very focused on what s happening in those predominantly white states of iowa and new hampshire but that to me is the pivotal issue. a story in axios made a lot of waves this morning. a focus group in michigan, of course swing voters who voted for president obama and then
new hampshire where he looks like he s gaining a lot of strength. what happens after that? the south carolina primary where 60% of the electorate are african-americans. last time i looked testifies zero percent in the polls among african-americans in south carolina. it s a big problem. it s a danger for his campaign on another level because the narrative has become so much about that, that he can t get over this hurdle, and that s self-reinforcing, it s a tailspin he can t get out of. they re working to shore up that support. i talked to al sharpton about this once and he said the best response from anyone, when al sharpton invited candidates to speak to harlem, the biggest response by far was to pete, a standing ovation in harlem. really? he said the reaction in harlem was by far the most excited. it remains to be seen if pete is
of that debate. to the point before, can i just note that buttigieg even if he comes out of iowa, faces the same challenge that warren would face, which is can either of them ultimately appeal to nonwhite voters, particularly african-american voters. the last four winners of iowa have won the democratic nomination. even when new hampshire diverged from the result. i think that s because in the modern media environment, the value of the first victory is so mag fi fied but gore, kerry, obama and clinton did well with african-american voters. if any of them can t do that, it might allow biden to have a bigger chance. to me, the biggest question in this race is whether sub par showings for biden in iowa and new hampshire dislodge his support among african-americans in south carolina or not. that s probably the biggest outstanding question of the democratic race. i see you re agreeing. for buttigieg, the black voter, that s an achilles for him because he hasn t been polling
