enforcement. at the same time it needs to be balanced with the fact that if there is this case it ought to be investigated as quickly as possible so that people know that the system works for them. he went on to say he s confident that president obama will step up. what do republicans want from the president here? you know, that s a good question. republicans constantly accuse the president of overreaching overstepping his authority as president of the united states so for them to turn around and demand that he do something when most of the time they would say leave it to local authorities i find rather curious. but we also have to remember that while president obama is president of the united states and we would love to see him inject himself and interject himself into every issue in every community and every country, he can t possibly do that. and i think, you know, to go back to what we started talking about here it is i think, terrific that you have
of freddie gray. all of that happened during the tenure of martin o malley. he was a democrat but appealed to conservatives by being a zero-tolerance mayor. well we re now seeing the result of that and so the governor comes back from being in ireland and england to hit the streets, talk to people in the community and leaders but he s getting heckled and booed because people have long memories and they blame him for a lot of what s going on. it s interesting, because the current mayor hasn t really gotten that kind of reception and she s been in power when this happens. right but, you know she hasn t been in office nearly as long as governor o malley was when he was when he was mayor. so he has a lot to answer for. and on the right, here s what jeb bush said on the matter tuesday in puerto rico. take a listen. there has to be a commitment to the real of law and to law
i think the largest perspective are folks who don t want to see violence. we had an amazing protest and folks participated in city hall and afterwards at night there was a small amount of folks that went further south of city hall and brought some destruction. this is bigger than freddie gray. freddie gray s incident was a culmination of things. the baltimore sun did a good report of saying the past six years, showing officers that had habitual issues associated with criminal and civil complaints against them. the police department has to do a better job of rooting out the department. i want to be honest to you, jose at the end of the day the large percentage of the police force are officers that care about the city but there s a small amount that continue to cause harm to our community and
drive this perceptions but that ultimately means distrust of our community to our police department department. we see the washington post report about what happened inside the van our nbc affiliate disputes the account. do you believe the baltimore police department is doing enough to clear up the misinformation or working on this investigation? do you support what they re doing and how they re doing it? i think the issue and where we are today is that initially when mr. gray was chased when he was apprehended, when he was detained and ultimately arrested and charged a lot of that information didn t come to the community. people were asking why was he charged, why was he originally a suspect? why was he chased and that s basic simple information. i go out and commit something, the police are supposed to tell me immediately what i m charged with if i m being arrested. unfortunately that wasn t necessarily the case and the community i think from there who ultimately already had di
the cripps and the black guerrilla family doing their best to self-police and convince people in the community not to engage in violence against baltimore police officers and those patrolling the street you know was a strategy that the mayor and her cabinet thought was an important process during the time. i think you reach out to whom you can reach out to. when there s rumors of violence or potential violence and this is a strategy. whether or not it had an effect it s hard to measure. we ll hear anecdotes, we ll hear clips like this but unless you re there out on the streets and asking individual gang members if that message was distributed amongst gang members through social media, instant messaging, it s hard to say. but these are the same gangs that are part of the gang culture that are the gangs in the united states that have relationships with the mexican
