Africa Day: our continent’s recovery requires international support

Today is Africa Day, celebrating the foundation of the African Union (AU). The AU now represents 55 member states that are guided by its vision of an integrated, prosperous Africa. If we have learned one lesson from the past year, it is the importance of telecoms connectivity to achieving that vision and creating inclusive, prosperous societies in Africa.
During the pandemic, Vodacom, Safaricom and Vodafone worked hard to keep African communities connected, accelerating investment in our networks to maintain capacity for our 123 million customers. We also connected more than 3.5 million students with digital education services, while enabling 14 million people to access online health services without using mobile data. Telecom hosts hybrid event on digitisation
VODACOM Tanzania is today hosting a hybrid webinar as part of the Innovation Week Tanzania (IWTz2021) in Dar es Salaam and eight other regions.

The IWTz2021 has been coordinated by HDIF, COSTECH and UNDP.
This year’s Innovation Week is themed “Innovation for a resilient and inclusive digital economy” and the hybrid event is one of the discussions and events around this theme featured during the week.
This interactive webinar, titled “Vodacom Fireside Chat on Africa.Connected” is expected to bring up multiple perspectives on digital connectivity and economic resilience as well as discuss issues related to fostering an inclusive and fair digital society in Tanzania. The session included a range of panelists and guest speakers from the government, CSO and private sectors. Participants also had an opportunity to raise questions and air their views and opinions.
Govt must consider Universal Mobile Wallet System to drive financial inclusion

The government and policy makers must engineer policies that will cause a “quantum shift and drive massive participation in the digital eco-system, Vodafone Ghana’s Legal and External Affairs Director, Geta Striggner-Quartey has said.
She said, having made a commitment to bridge the digital and economic divide with its purpose led agenda, Vodafone Ghana in an industry first, completely waived charges to any network via Vodafone Cash.
“We urge the government to lift barriers to significantly drive increased usage and acceptance across board. Having a universal wallet system which makes it possible for customers to access funds from every mobile agent will be a game changer,” she said.
