(The Center Square) â President Joe Biden vowed Wednesday to remove U.S. troop presence from Afghanistan this year, a decision that sparked praise from some and warnings from others concerned the nation could fall into disarray.
Biden gave an address Wednesday defending his decision to have troops out of Afghanistan by Sept. 11 of this year, the 20th anniversary of the attacks that led to the war on terror.
âWe cannot continue the cycle of extending or expanding our military presence in Afghanistan hoping to create the ideal conditions for our withdrawal and expecting a different result,â Biden said.
The September pledge extended former President Donald Trumpâs previously set withdrawal date of May 1. Trumpâs choice of a May 2021 withdrawal date pushed the issue past the election, and in this case, into another presidentâs lap. There are currently 2,500 troops in Afghanistan.
