reporter: the rescue and recovery operation after hurricane ian continuing on this small white sand island of fort myers beach located in lee county, an island that is now an island of rubble, 54 deaths now reported in this county alone. we re looking for anybody that may have been left behind. the devastation is hard to put into words. reporter: we joined a rescue operation that includes search and rescue dogs. we send the dog in, the dog will sniff around. if we can t make contact, we ll walk up and start hollering and see if we get a response from anybody. if we don t hear anything, we bring a second dog up. reporter: as we walked around on fort myers beach, there is just destruction everywhere. the water that came in here just decimated this area and a lot of people are asking us, when will power come back, how long will it take to recover? and it will be different for some folks. where i am standing right now, this used to be a home. now stairs that lead to now
the varsity team is being forced to forfeit its season. stephanie elam takes a closer look at what happened. we are in 2022, about to go to 2023 and this is still happening? frustration and shock in a northern california community after a video showing members of the river valley high school ver varsity football team taking part in a disturbing prank. school officials in the school district obtained the video described as a quote, slave sale, last week and barred the students involved from competing. cnn has not seen the video, but cnn affiliate kcra says it shows about a dozen students pointing and yelling dollar amounts at the black students standing in their underwear up against a wall. the rest of the varsity season will be forfeited since the team doesn t have enough players to continue. they need counseling or

it was supposed to be an elegant wedding reception but when the groom backed out, the bride s family saw a way to give back. tom miller from our affiliate kcra has the story. reporter: the tables are set, food hot out of the oven and one by one, the guests arrive. these aren t the men, women and children the dwayne family planned to host but they re happy to do it, nonetheless. when i found out on monday the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed like, of course, this would be something we would do to give back. reporter: earlier in the week, the would-be groom got cold feet and called off the wedding. rather than cancel the $35,000 outing, the bride s family invited the city s homeless for a once in a lifetime meal at one of sacramento s finest hotels. they were very generous to lose out on something so important and give it to yourself is very giving. reporter: many came with their families, giving their
i know so many of you have been, you know, shoveling mountains of snow and driving on ice. but, boy, the poor folks in california are dealing with the severe drought. the golden state produces nearly half of all the fruits and nuts and vegetables for the country. so officials are now taking steps to prevent the reservoirs from going dry. david of cnn affiliate kcra has the details. with the week s storm having barely made a dent in california s water shortage state official says the drought has taken on new urgency. this is not a coming crisis, this is not an evolving crisis, this is a current crisis. reporter: the state s top water official says he is putting aside environmental rules scheduled to kick in. those rules normally require more water to start flowing through the daleelta this time year between where the delta is salty and fresh. the state says it instead will be keep that water we behind
