At Native News Online, our editorial finds that important events that have a long-lasting impact on Indian Country aren’t necessarily the most read stories by our readers. On June 15, The United States Supreme Court issued a highly anticipated ruling that protects tribal sovereignty and the rights of Native American families when it comes to adoption and foster-care proceedings involving Native children. The court’s opinion in the case Haaland v. Brackeen upheld the federal Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), a 1978 law that gives tribal governments exclusive jurisdiction over Native children who live on reservations.
The sky was blue and temperatures were unseasonably warm as we pulled into the Carlisle Barracks campus at the former Indian boarding school. A couple of small children could be heard talking as they played and ran with a large yellowish-brown dog following closely behind. Then, one of the children, a young girl, ran onto a porch and disappeared into the white apartment building that is part of the large complex that houses officers who attend the U.S. Army War College.
Along the federal government’s “Road to Healing Tour” for Indian boarding school survivors, there were a lot of flags on display. Native American honor guards, at most tour stops, proudly presented the flag of the United States, eagle staffs and tribal nation flags.

The tenth listening session of the year-long Road to Healing tour of Native communities made it's stop in Anchorage, Alaska on Sunday, October 22, 2023. The listening session, led by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo) and Assistant Secretary - Interior Affairs Bryan Newland (Bay Mills Indian Community), was part of a year-long series launched in July 2022 to provide Native Americans affected by the federal Indian board school system an opportunity to share their experiences and the effects on their communities.
