The Port Huron Police Department launched a new program this week to improve officers mental health and remove the stigma of asking for help.
Det. Adrianne Mynsberge said the two-pronged peer support program will include a debriefing team to provide peer supports for officers to talk to after a traumatic event.
Community Service Officer Duane Hunger said traumatic events could be rare, like officer-involved shootings or the death of a child, or more common events, like overdoses.
Mynesberge said the other prong will be a confidential peer support person available for any officer or their family member who needs it. Officers could talk about any issues that come up in their personal or professional lives.
