Scatterbrained ‘False Positive’ drives promising premise into ground

“False Positive” has all the trappings of the sharp 21st century horror film. It’s smoothly shot with a bounty of prestigious family and social drama, but it would take different hands to bring all that to light. As the film (a minor A24 production sent to Hulu, for good reason) stands, director John Lee has thrown a jumbled mess at the wall, hoping anything will stick.
Some stuff does, but “False Positive,” supposedly a dark comedy, can’t figure out how to latch onto the satire lurking in its concept. Marketing executive Lucy (Ilana Glazer) has been trying to conceive with husband Adrian (Justin Theroux), a well-to-do surgeon, for two years and, at their wit’s end, they turn to fertility specialist Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). Rosemary’s Baby in a current setting, but its frequent on-the-nose dialogue makes it feel more like a caricature than a fleshed-out character study.
Ilana Glazer (who also co-wrote the screenplay) plays Lucy, a woman desperate to get pregnant and do more than take lunch orders at her marketing firm. Her husband, Adrian (Justin Theroux), brings her to a colleague’s fertility clinic for artificial insemination. On the outside, the clinic looks like a sanitized utopia: white furniture, photos of happy mothers and their babies on the walls and blonde hair, blue-eyed nurses who look like Stepford Wives.
