Subscriber only A giant sinkhole has opened up on a suburban street in Coffs Harbour, as a severe warning for heavy rainfall and abnormally high tides is issued for Northern NSW residents. Coffs Harbour City Council said a pipe under the pathway collapsed from the weight of the sodden soil. It comes as intense weather continues to batter the east coast for the sixth day, with rainfall rates expected to ease slightly today as the trough weakens and extends south.

Flood warnings remain in place in parts of northern NSW where five consecutive days of wild weather has caused thousands of residents to remain on standby for evacuation.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for people in the North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Lower Western and Upper Western Forecast Districts.

While Monday morning s king tide saw offshore swell reach up to 10 metres and 2.24 metres on North Coast beaches around Byron Bay, Tweed Heads and Ballina Monday s low king tide will see wave heights ease along the coastline. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Abrar Shabren said the low tide would hit around 9:30pm on Monday but rainfall and wind gusts above 70km/h would remain in full force.
