TURNER’S CREEK — The Granary of Turner’s Creek, a large two-story frame structure alongside the Sassafras River, rests on brick piers with a shallow gable roof; awaiting its fate.
CHESTERTOWN â The Kent County Commissioners started the process Tuesday of raising the income threshold for the State Homeowners Property Tax Program, giving more county residents over the age of 60 the option to enroll.
The state-run program offers a local credit on property taxes. Currently, to be eligible, applicants must be homeowners in the county (or in any of the five municipalities) and must be 60 or older with a combined household income of $30,000 or less.
The commissioners introduced a resolution Tuesday to raise that threshold to a combined household income of $35,000 or less. The commissioners will hold a public hearing before voting.
