Delivery of vaccine is not going as smoothly.
Vaccinations are being rolled out in a cumbersome phased system, and states such as Wisconsin are complaining they donât know far enough in advance when theyâll be getting how much vaccine.
While the vaccines were being developed, state and local officials had months to scheme about how the vaccine should be distributed, to whom and in what order. All of that was figured out a long time ago, right?
Wrong.
The vaccine is being distributed in Wisconsin to Phase 1A recipientsâfrontline hospital staff and nursing homes. Thatâs about a half million people, state officials estimate.

JANESVILLE, Wis. – The recently formed Rock County Advisory Committee will ask the Rock County Board for $250,000 in funding during a regularly scheduled meeting Thursday night.
The committee, made up of 30 members including emergency managers, fire chiefs, healthcare partners and the county health department, would use the money to help further equip the county for widescale vaccination efforts.
“That money makes all the difference in the world,” said Kelsey Cordova of the Rock County Public Health Department. “All parts of the COVID-19 response and recovery are very human resource intensive. It takes people to do disease investigation and contact tracing. The more people you have, the faster and more effective you can be at that.”

The COVID-19 vaccine is reaching first responders in addition to health care workers and skilled nursing facilities.
Janesville Police Chief Dave Moore said Mercy hospital vaccinated 56 of his officers in an hour on Monday night, and he anticipates the rest of his staff will be offered the inoculation in January.
Beloit Memorial Hospital used some of its surplus vaccines to treat over a dozen members of the Beloit Fire Department.
Fire Chief Dan Pease said his staff haven’t received yet the vaccines they requested from the state.
Rock County nursing homes will start administering the vaccine next week.
Rock County Public Health Officer Marie-Noel Sandoval will retire early next year amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
County Administrator Josh Smith was notified of Sandovalâs plan Nov. 11. Her last day will be Jan. 4, but she will remain on the countyâs payroll until her vacation hours are exhausted Feb. 15, according to Sandovalâs letter to Smith.
Sandoval said she had planned to retire âat a certain ageâ since the beginning of her career, she said. She had intended to retire in spring 2020, but stayed on to help lead her team through the pandemic.
There is a lot yet unknown about how the pandemic will play out, Sandoval said, but she is confident she is leaving her team well equipped to carry out a successful response.
