After months of negotiating, falling out, and with at least one union walking out, government has made one more offer to unions in the public service wage negotiations, hoping that all unions representing civil servants will return to the table to consider it.
However, Monday afternoon s briefing by Public Service and Administration Minister Senzo Mchunu is just the latest turn in a long and winding journey in the latest public service wage talks, which have taken an especially adversarial tone.
The new offer from government will increase wages by 1.5% and includes a monthly R1 000 cash allowance. For the lowest-paid public servants (level 1 workers), this will result in an 11.7% pay adjustment.
