State scales back on salt study

State scales back on salt study Amended legislation will restrict public disclosures that could increase liability Ry Rivard Adirondack Explorer FacebookTwitterEmail Road salt is seen in the shed as Department of Transportation workers get snowplows ready for potential snow expected early tomorrow morning Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020 in Latham, N.Y. (Lori Van Buren/Times Union)Lori Van Buren/Albany Times Union SARANAC LAKE State lawmakers recently scaled back a study of road salt pollution in the Adirondacks, apparently bowing to concerns that the study could expose the state to liability from residents with unsafe water. Late last year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law that would require the state to form a task force to examine the effects of road salt pollution in the Adirondacks. Each year, the state dumps millions of pounds of salt on roads to keep them clear of ice and snow.
