Given the injuries reflected in the report, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has now sought a report of the Shiv Kumar’s medical examination, which was conducted when the Sonepat police arrested him under Section 54 of the CrPC. The court today scheduled March 16 as the next date of hearing in the case of Shiv’s alleged illegal custody and torture.
The affidavit submitted by the superintendent of the Sonepat jail to the High Court included a copy of the medical board’s report.
According to the report, Shiv, who was taken to the GMCH on February 20 after a High Court order, also showed signs of “post-traumatic stress disorder-like symptoms”. “All injuries are more than two weeks old and were caused by blunt object/weapon,” according to the report prepared by the GMCH board. On Saturday morning arrived Shiv Kumar, 24, president of the Mazdoor Adhikaar Sangathan, at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 with Haryana cops for his medical examination as ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His medical reports will be out on Monday, said lawyers, who accompanied Shiv and the police.
Shiv was arrested by the Haryana Police on January 16 from Kundli border for mobilising the workers of the Kundli Industrial Area, said his friends.
His father Rajbir Kumar and two friends Jasminder Tinku and Ankit waited at the park facing the hospital’s Emergency building to catch a glimpse of Shiv. Teary-eyed, his father broke down looking at his son’s limping gait. “Kya gareebo ki bhalaai, adhikaar kay liye ladna itna bada jurm hai? (Is it a crime to fight for the rights of poor?),” he mumbled to himself.
