Scene 1: Auctioning of poor drivers' vehicles, hear them: "No Mercy, the law must take its course, it will serve as a deterrent to other reckless drivers." That was their chorus when the Lagos State government auctioned seized vehicles of "one-way" reckless drivers. The affected poor drivers were sobbing with their dependants in public glare as their means of livelihood were being sold to unknown & "we we" buyers. An offence which a light prison sentence, a fine, or both could have served as appropriate punishment.
I don't have issues with people's right of reply and writers or speakers defining their circumference of thoughts in public discourse as a right. But here, I speak of insolent citizens who abuse elders with pleasure now trying in vain to become moral compass to their fellow insolent citizens. Gosh! That's moral fraud and unacceptable to me. I have had reasons to disagree with Soyinka publicly right from my university days as a student activist & campus journalist. And I had commended the global literary guru and ever courageous social activist many times.
