New Zealand hope George Bennett faces an uphill battle to remain in contention at the Giro d’Italia after losing precious time to his main rivals on a rainswept fourth stage. The Jumbo-Visma rider was one of the major casualties from Wednesday’s wet and windy 187-kilometre trek from Piacenza to Sestola, giving up almost 90 seconds on pre-race favourites Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious). Shivering from the terrible conditions, Bennett lost contact when Landa kicked off a series of attacks on the climb up the Colle Passerino and finished the stage in 38th, 1:29 down a group that featured Bernal, Landa and Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana-Premier Tech).

Bennett drops off the pace in Giro d Italia

New Zealand rider George Bennett has lost significant ground on the fourth stage of the Giro d Italia battling in bad weather conditions. Bennett who s the lead rider for the Jumbo-Visma team was unable to keep on the pace on the final climb to Sestola crossing the line 3 minutes behind the American stage winner Joe Dombrowski to sit a minute 3 minutes and ten seconds behind the overall leader Italian Alessandro de Marchi.
