Austin trees suffering after winter storm, freeze may not make it

If you haven’t noticed, some of Central Texas’ trees aren’t looking so good.  Live oaks with leaves sprouting from the branches and trunk. Ash trees with a sporadic green on only half of the canopy. Loquat, fig and citrus trees with growth at the base of the tree and nowhere else. Joshua Erickson, forestry program manager for the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, said we’re seeing evidence of unprecedented damage to Austin’s trees, and even with his own friends and neighbors, he finds himself the bearer of bad news. Many trees that are suffering now aren t going to make it through the summer, and even if they do, we are going to be seeing some funky trees for years to come, he said.

Sweetish Hill founder writing second cookbook, hosting fundraiser auction

Pulaski only worked at Sweetish Hill Bakery for a few years, but she s still milking it. “My professional claim to fame is I was Sweetish Hill’s first employee. When I tell people that, it’s like the waters part. I have an amazing amount of street cred because of those three years, she says. Pulaski was a recent UT graduate who was enough of a hippie to want to stay in Austin even though “there were no jobs except government.” She was friends with Jane Koock, a member of the family that owned Green Pastures, who knew Bauer-Slate.  “I called her up and we had a two-hour love conversation, Pulaski says. We were, like, in love after two hours. That’s how it started.”

Get a free beer with your vaccine at Save the World Brewing Co

Austin 360 As the number of people seeking the COVID-19 vaccine has decreased, there s a distribution push happening at some unexpected places, like the Far Out Lounge in South Austin, which is hosting a Pfizer vaccine drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 15. Also on Saturday, Save the World Brewing Co. is hosting a Pints for Pokes COVID-19 vaccine clinic from 12 to 5 p.m. at the brewery, 1510 Resource Parkway in Marble Falls.  The free, walk-in clinic with 100 doses will distribute the Moderna vaccine, and if you get vaccinated, the brewery will give you a free beer.  Owners Dave and Quynh Rathkamp started Save the World Brewing in 2014 as a way to bring craft beer to Marble Falls and raise money for local charities while they were at it. All proceeds go to several nonprofits, including local food banks, which received about $60,000 in donations in the past year.

Austin favorite Valentina s Tex Mex BBQ moving to downtown Buda

One of Austin s best barbecue joints is moving. This is a dream come true for our family, and we can’t thank you guys enough for making this dream a reality for us, the Vidal family wrote on Instagram.  The popular barbecue restaurant first opened in a trailer on Brodie Lane in 2013 and then moved into a brick-and-mortar on Menchaca Road a few years later. Buda Mill & Grain, located on the southern edge of Buda s downtown, has a number of retail outlets, restaurants, salons and studios. Valentina s is building out what the Buda Mill & Grain folks call the ‘Big ‘Un’, they said on Instagram.

New Austin Hopfields opening this summer in former Sway space

Steak frites are coming to South Austin. Hopfields, the French bistro cafe north of the University of Texas campus, is opening a second location on South First Street called Hopfields Bouldin Creek.  The building at 1417 S. First St. formerly housed Sway, which closed that location during the pandemic. At the new location, the Hopfields team also will brew its own beer to serve alongside a large selection of craft beer. The interior of the 4,000-square-foot restaurant will not open for full service until July, which is when they will add breakfast, lunch and dinner service. Starting this month, chef James Flowers is hosting weekly behind the scenes dinners inside the still-under-renovation space.
