As the 2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) gradually winds down, leading title contenders are doing everything humanly possible to avoid unnecessary slips that would give advantage to their rivals.
At the moment, Akwa United who are in the hunt for their maiden title are leading the chasing pack with 57 points from 31 matches played so far. The ‘Promise keepers’ are followed closely by the trio of Nasarawa United, Kano Pillars and Enyimba FC.
While both Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars are on 55 points, former champions, Enyimba who only recently edged out Kwara United 1-0 in their rescheduled week 22 match have amassed 54 points.

Akwa United have come out tops in the battle for the top position of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with a 2-1 victory over second placed Nasarawa United in yesterday’s double header at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.
The ‘Promise keepers’ who are hunting for a maiden title went in search of an early goal but Ikechukwu Nwani missed a sitter from 10 yards in the 10th minute.
The ‘solid miners’ also responded immediately as they forced Akwa Utd keeper, Adewale Adeyinka to make a smart fingertip save to deny Silas Nwankwo.
While Pillars are on 41 points, Kwara United, Nasarawa United and Rivers United are on 39 points each with a chance of going to the top.
Therefore, if the two matches in Kaduna and Ilorin end in draw, Pillars will assume leadership again pending the outcome of tomorrow’s match between Abia Warriors and Akwa United in Okigwe.
Although Pillars will be motivated by Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa and their influential captain Rabiu Ali, they must be wary of Nasarawa United who ended their 12-year unbeaten home record with a 2-1 victory in 2015.
In today’s match, Pillars will have to put an eye on Adamu Hassan who left them under unpleasant circumstances in 2020 to rejoin his home club and has been consistent in scoring against them.
