An investigation by the U.S. Office of Inspector General at a Natchez federal detention center for immigrants found violations of standards that threatened the health, safety and rights of detainees.
One detainee died while in custody at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, according to a July 14 report about the investigation s findings.
Office of Inspector General investigators assigned to the Department of Homeland Security discovered the violations during unannounced remote inspections of Adams County Correctional Facility from January to February 2021.
The detainee who died requested medical attention for pain in his chest and arms on Dec. 17, 2020. He was taken to the medical unit where he was examined, but later released. While waiting to return to his cell, the man collapsed. Medical staff and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead.
