The sentencing hearing for an Oshawa man found guilty in the killing and dismemberment of two women a decade apart has been pushed back to the end of May.
Last month, a judge found Adam Strong guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Rori Hache and of manslaughter in that of Kandis Fitzpatrick.
Legal experts have told
The Toronto Sun that the Oshawa man can expect to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
But his long-awaited sentencing hearing came off the rails because of the rampaging pandemic.
Judge Justice Joseph Di Luca said the delay was the result of an edict from the Office of the Chief Justice. The jurist said no one was at fault.
“We have to get this done but it has to be weighed against public safety,” Di Luca said via Zoom. “This is beyond my control.”
Crown and defence lawyers will reconvene on May 10 to either attend a sentencing hearing (depending on COVID) or schedule a new sentencing date.
Graphic content warning: This story contains details readers may find disturbing. A sentencing hearing will begin today for the 47-year-old Oshawa man who killed and dismembered two young women over a period of nearly 10 years. At the conclusion of his judge-alone trial last month, Adam Strong was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Rori Hache and manslaughter in the death of 19-year-old Kandis Fitzpatrick. Hache disappeared in 2017 and Fitzpatrick was last seen by her family in 2008. In his decision, Ontario Superior Court Justice Joseph Di Luca said he was satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that Strong sexually assaulted and murdered Hache, who was believed to be pregnant at the time she was killed.
