More than 60 percent of the city budget’s general fund is typically spent on public safety, including the police and fire departments, emergency management operations, and court and jail services. Spending on police alone accounts for about a third of that general fund. On May 1, voters will choose the 14 people who have the power to shape that budget Mayor Eric Johnson is in the middle of his first term, but every other council seat is being contested.
