legislation proposed would not have prevented what happened in newtown, would not have prevented what happened in aurora. so their stance is, this means nothing. this is an infringement on someone s second amendment rights. what is your reaction to the fact that what we are looking at would not have prevented those two massacres? first of all, they are not supporting an assault weapon ban either. if you have an assault weapon ban, you wouldn t have had adam lan saturd lanza with the ar-15s. the gig is up. they ve had a lock on congress for two decades. in 1999 wayne lapierre who after columbine said we should have universal background checks. that s what he said. now he has flipped. now, i don t think the nra has a lot of credibility right now because even their members support a universal background check.
compounded the error by sending joe biden off to conduct a study, an unnecessary delay when solutions were obvious. once the president took his foot off the accelerator no other action, not even michael bloomberg s ad campaign could maintain the momentum. directed very much at the president there, jim. right although of course i hope hillary clinton loved that line about biden failing, didn t she? i think what s really happening also is a greater precision about what is going on. rand paul asked last week, look, show me one thing in these gun proposal has would have stopped these guys from killing. and i don t think anybody had a good answer to them. as a matter of fact will salatan at slate.com this morning went through the cases of jar rod laughner, james holmes and the guy in connecticut, adam lan today and said these people were all clearly mentally ill, they were crazy. that s why they went on these killing sprees. and he had to admit, he is no conservative he had to admit that
aren t going to work unless they are accompanied by some sort of registration system. but the american people when asked about that are far less comfortable. they are not really comfortable with the idea of the government knowing exactly what firearm they purchase any more than they would be comfortable with the government nothing when or how often they go to church or ha they eat for breakfast or what books they are reading from the library. this is a concern to us, and i can t support that legislation either. alisyn: senator, on this week when we ve learned so much more about the newtown massacre, because those documents have been released, and we ve learned that adam lan today the shooter was able to fire 150 round in the space of less than five minutes, what do you think is the answer to prevent something like that from ever happening again? look that was an absolutely tragic event and none of us wants to see anything like that ever repeated in america. i wish it were possible th
rick: the body of at cuesed connecticut school shooter has been claimed for burial about two weeks after those killings, adam lanza s father taking responsibility for his son s remains. police say lanza shot and killed 26 people at sandy hook elementary school before killing himself. trace gallagher is live from our l.a. bureau with more on this. trace. reporter: it s interesting, rick, because the first who first claimed adam lanza s remains wanted to be anonymous. we have now confirmed that his father peter lanza did in fact claim his son s body but he made no announcement at all about any funeral arrangements and said that he will not reveal the burial site. we ve also learned that peter lanza who was a tax director at general electric has asked geneticists from the university of connecticut to scan his son s, research his son s brain for any mutations or abnormalities that could shed some light on his motive for the shooting. as you know police are still trying to come up with a
mourning together. and it is not just this community that is coming together to show support. an outpouring of sympathy and support is also coming in from around the country, helping these families and this community find more solace and strength. alex? all right, michelle franzen, thank you. we are hearing from the father of adam lan zblachlt a statement, peter lanza says, no words can truly express how heartbroken we are. we are in a state of disbelief in trying and-to-find whatever answers we can. he too are asking why. in washington today the discussion has turned to a debate over assault weapons on this morning s meet the press, senator dianne feinstein said she will lead the charge for a ban. joining me now nbc news investigative correspondent michael isikoff. michael with a welcome to you, how much does the type of weapon used change this story? reporter: well, i think it could change it a lot. in fact, probably the most significant disclosure we have gotten in the l
