Why Poland threatened to veto the EU recovery fund

As if the past year hadn’t already been difficult enough, Poland and Hungary recently threatened to derail negotiations over the Multiannual Financial Framework and the Next Generation EU fund, both of which are designed to help the European Union and its members cope with the economic fallout of covid-19 crisis. The standoff was at least temporarily resolved by a show of constructive ambiguity. Yet the whole fracas puts a long-standing paradox into stark relief. Poland, whose citizens are among the most pro-EU in the union, remains either on the periphery of the European project, as shown by ECFR’s Coalition Explorer, or in direct opposition to its main trends: not only on foreign and climate policy, but also on the interpretation of the EU’s fundamental values and national sovereignty. Domestically, there is no significant voting bloc that would support hardline opposition to the EU, but this is the approach that the government in Warsaw has taken. The result of the showdown

"3.4 million vaccinations per month, 3.4 million doses of the vaccine can be administered"

TVN24 Zaloguj się Zaloguj się 3.4 million vaccinations per month, 3.4 million doses of the vaccine can be administered Źródło: Adam Guz/KPRMMichal Dworczyk at a news conference Poland should be able to administer 3.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine a month, the prime minister s top aide said on Saturday, as the country s health service gears up for what is likely to be its biggest logistical challenge ever. The number of daily cases in emerging Europe s largest economy has fallen after a surge in October and early November, but the number of deaths has remained stubbornly high, regularly exceeding 500. 3.4 million vaccinations per month, 3.4 million doses of the vaccine can be administered in accordance with the applications that we received, Michal Dworczyk told at a news conference, adding that 8,319 vaccination teams had applied to take part in the programme.
