A £23M upgrade of one of Somerset’s main theatres has been given the final go-ahead – though it may not be enough to secure a concert by Adele. South Somerset District Council announced in late-December 2020 its intention to upgrade the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil, boosting its capacity and technical equipment so that it can support larger shows. The government announced in March that it would be providing £10M towards the project as part of the Budget, as well as allowing the council to claim back all the VAT associated with the project.

£10million funding for The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil announced during Budget

A SOMERSET theatre is set to benefit from £10million of funding. The manager of the venue said it was a wonderful surprise at a dark dark time , after the news was announced during the Budget on Wednesday (March 3). Plans for a £23million renovation at The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil were announced earlier this year. And the £10million will help with the upgrade, which is set to include increased capacity (the main auditorium will seat 900 rather than 622); a fly tower and two smaller performance spaces. Adam Burgan, arts and entertainment venues manager for South Somerset District Council, said the funding announcement was a “wonderful surprise”.
